He recently retired as a Professor from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. During his 25-year career as a specialist physician, Dr. Kalia edited two medical textbooks, contributed chapters to 16 other medical books and received numerous teaching awards. He has given more than 80 invited presentations in the USA and abroad. In the past few years, Dr. Kalia has become increasingly interested in strategies for healthy eating and effective life-long weight management. He believes that good health starts with the right knowledge, and his presentations are designed to provide that knowledge.
Content Summary: Dr. Kalia’s uses his experience and skills as a medical teacher to take his audience for guided tours inside and outside the body: inside the body to understand how it works, and outside the body to understand the food that we eat. His goal is to empower individuals to regain control of their eating habits, health, and weight. In his presentations, Dr. Kalia makes complex medical concepts come alive for a lay audience. Why, and how, does the body make fat? Why is it easier to lose weight than to keep it off? Why does weight loss slow down after the first few pounds? Why is fat around the waist more dangerous than fat anywhere else? What are the mechanisms of hunger, and how can we use this knowledge to our advantage? What is “insulin resistance”? How much weight does a person need to lose to turn back the complications of obesity? And the foods that we eat: What, really, are omega-3 and omega-6 fats and why are they important? What is the difference between grass-fed and grain-fed beef? Why do we need antioxidants, and is it OK to get them in a pill? What is soluble and insoluble fiber? What is the difference between all-purpose, enriched, whole-grain and stone-ground flour? What does "organic" really mean? What is the role of exercise in weight loss? At the end of each session, Dr. Kalia pulls all this information together to generate suggestions for healthy eating that you can use in your busy life. He then throws open the session for questions. What do you want to know more about? Cholesterol? Osteoporosis? High-fructose corn syrup? Quinoa? Ask away!
